🧣Snuggle Up for Scleroderma: Warming Hearts and Lives This Winter
As winter’s chill sets in around Australia, imagine facing the cold with a condition that makes warmth not just a comfort, but a necessity. For over 6,000 Australians living with scleroderma, this is a daily reality. Throughout June, during World Scleroderma Awareness Month, Scleroderma Australia invites you to “Snuggle Up” and make a tangible difference.
“Snuggle Up for Scleroderma” is more than a call to stay warm; it’s a nationwide movement to raise funds for specialist scleroderma nurses. These dedicated professionals provide essential support, helping patients navigate the complexities of this chronic autoimmune disease.
Why It Matters:
Scleroderma can cause skin tightening and affect internal organs, making temperature regulation a challenge. Specialist nurses play a crucial role in managing symptoms and improving quality of life. However, funding for these positions is limited, and community support is vital.
Personal Story – Tara’s Journey:
Tara Haneveld’s life took an unexpected turn when she began experiencing sore fingers while playing the clarinet, followed by foot pain. Despite initial assumptions of post-illness fatigue, her condition didn’t improve, leading to a diagnosis of scleroderma. The disease drastically affected her life, making simple tasks challenging due to pain and contractures in her hand joints. Despite these hardships, Tara found a way to give back through volunteer work with Scleroderma Queensland and Scleroderma Australia. She now serves as the Deputy Chair of Scleroderma Australia and the President of Scleroderma Queensland, advocating for patient-led research and support services.
How You Can Help:
Participate in the “Snuggle Up” campaign by hosting a cosy event:
- Organise a slumber party in your favourite pyjamas.
- Host a film night with friends
- Host an afternoon tea adorned with gloves and scarves.
- Arrange a casual clothes day at your workplace.
Every dollar raised brings us closer to funding more specialist nurses and providing critical support to those affected.

This is the eighth year of Scleroderma Australia’s Snuggle Up campaign, and your involvement can make it the most impactful yet. Whether you donate, host an event, or simply spread the word, your actions contribute to a warmer, more supportive community for those living with scleroderma.
