Scleroderma Victoria is proud to launch its new Support Group Guidelines, a practical resource designed to support current and future support group leaders and strengthen peer support across our community.

Support groups play an important role in helping people affected by scleroderma connect with others who understand their experiences. They provide opportunities to share practical information, learn from lived experience, reduce feelings of isolation, and build confidence in navigating the challenges of living with a complex and often misunderstood condition.

At Scleroderma Victoria, we know that great support groups don’t happen by accident. They are made possible by dedicated volunteer leaders who generously give their time, energy and lived experience to create welcoming and supportive spaces for others. These new guidelines reflect our commitment to supporting those volunteers and ensuring they have the tools, knowledge and confidence to lead effective groups.

The guidelines provide practical advice on:

  • Creating safe, welcoming and inclusive environments
  • Encouraging meaningful participation and connection
  • Understanding the role and boundaries of peer support
  • Respecting confidentiality and privacy
  • Managing group dynamics constructively
  • Building sustainable and successful support networks

The resource also recognises that people seek support in different ways. It introduces a framework that acknowledges a range of group models, from informal social gatherings through to structured peer support programs and SPIN-led groups, allowing communities to develop approaches that best meet local needs.

In the coming months, Scleroderma Victoria will be working with our Support Group Leaders to review and implement the guidelines across our network. We hope this will help ensure a consistent, high-quality experience for participants while supporting leaders in their important role.

By investing in our support groups, we are investing in our community. We want every person affected by scleroderma to feel confident attending a group, knowing they will be welcomed, respected and supported by people who genuinely understand the realities of living with the condition.

We also hope these guidelines contribute to broader conversations across Australia about strengthening peer support and ensuring people living with scleroderma have access to safe, well-supported and sustainable communities.

Meaningful support is built on reciprocity and lived experience. When people come together to share, listen and learn from one another, everyone benefits.

The Support Group Guidelines are available to download from the Scleroderma Victoria Resources section.
