At Scleroderma Victoria, our aim is to support people with scleroderma through support groups, educational talks, research fundraising, and much more.
This is all made possible by the generous support of people with scleroderma, their family and friends, and the wider community.
In fact, we at Scleroderma Victoria rely on generosity to do what we do. Aside from membership fees, donations and fundraisers, we depend on bequests and memorial donations to serve the scleroderma community.
In this article, we’ll explain how bequests work to help you decide whether this is right for you.
What is a bequest?
A bequest is a gift, often of money, that you donate to a person or organisation through your will. In other words, after you pass away, some of your money or property gets donated to your chosen cause.
Why leave a bequest?
A bequest is a popular way of leaving a legacy that makes a positive difference.
A bequest goes to a cause you are passionate about, for example, a donation to Scleroderma Victoria so that we can continue supporting the scleroderma community.
It’s also a nice way of being remembered, as your memory will be associated with a charitable donation.
Benefits of a bequest
With so much uncertainty in life, you may not feel comfortable or ready to donate at this time. But that doesn’t mean you can’t do so in the future.
Leaving a bequest after you pass away gives you more financial security in the present while also allowing you to contribute to a good cause one day.
For example, you could leave what’s called a residual bequest. In this case, you will provide for your loved ones first and any leftover funds go to your favourite cause.
How do I leave a bequest?
At Scleroderma Victoria, we’ve been receiving donations and bequests to support people with scleroderma for more than 40 years.
In this time, we’ve learned a lot about how our supporters can leave a bequest for our organisation.
