The 2026 Gene Swinstead Memorial Luncheon, held on 28 June in recognition of World Scleroderma Day, brought together members of the scleroderma community, supporters, families and friends for an afternoon of connection, reflection and hope. The event paid tribute to the enduring legacy of Gene Swinstead, and hosted by his wife Anne, whose commitment to supporting people affected by scleroderma continues to inspire the work of the organisation today. Guests enjoyed a wonderful lunch, and the generosity of attendees helped raise more than $26,000 to support ongoing awareness, advocacy and community programs. A special thanks to GB Galvanizing for their generous donation of $20,000, and to the London Tavern Hotel for their hospitality and generosity in donating the luncheon.
A highlight of the afternoon was a conversation with guest speaker Penny Richards Fowler, a passionate advocate whose daughter Mabel was diagnosed with scleroderma as a young person. Penny shared her family’s journey navigating diagnosis, treatment and the transition to adult healthcare, offering a powerful perspective on the challenges and resilience of families living with rare autoimmune conditions. Guests were also inspired by Mabel’s creative achievements, including her photography exhibition at the National Gallery of Victoria’s Top Arts 2026, demonstrating how art can foster connection, understanding and hope within the scleroderma community.
Thanks to the dedication of volunteers, sponsors and attendees, the event was a meaningful celebration of community spirit, lived experience and advocacy, ensuring that Gene Swinstead’s legacy continues to make a positive difference in the lives of people affected by scleroderma.
